Faq for TOPOTECAN - ORAL
Topotecan oral is a prescription medication used to treat ovarian cancer, lung cancer, and cervical cancer. It belongs to a class of drugs called topoisomerase inhibitors.
Topotecan oral works by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme called topoisomerase, which is involved in DNA replication and repair. By blocking this enzyme, the medication disrupts the growth and spread of cancer cells.
Common side effects of Topotecan oral may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, reduced appetite, hair loss, and low blood cell counts. It is important to discuss any persistent or severe side effects with your doctor.
Topotecan oral is usually taken once daily for 5 days in a row, followed by a 21-day break before starting the next cycle. It is important to take the medication at the same time each day, with or without food, as directed by your doctor.
It is best to avoid grapefruit juice while taking Topotecan oral, as it may increase the concentration of the medication in your bloodstream and lead to an increased risk of side effects. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
Topotecan oral may cause harm to a developing fetus, so it is not recommended for use during pregnancy. It is important to use effective contraception during treatment and consult your doctor if you become pregnant.
Topotecan oral is not typically used in children, as its safety and effectiveness have not been established in this population. Your doctor will determine the best treatment options for pediatric patients.
If you miss a dose of Topotecan oral, take it as soon as you remember unless it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Consult your doctor for further instructions.
Topotecan oral may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or changes in vision, which can impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you experience these side effects, it is advisable to avoid such activities until you feel alert and have clear vision.
Warning
WARNING: Topotecan decreases bone marrow function. This effect may lead to a low number of blood cells such as red cells, white cells, and platelets. A low number of blood cells can cause anemia, decrease your body's ability to fight an infection, or cause your body to bruise or bleed more easily. Tell your doctor right away if you develop any of the following symptoms: unusual tiredness, pale skin, signs of infection (such as sore throat that doesn't go away, fever, chills), easy bruising/bleeding. Your doctor will order frequent blood tests to monitor your bone marrow function while you are taking this medication. Keep all medical and laboratory appointments.
