Faq for TELMISARTAN - ORAL

Telmisartan is an oral medication belonging to a class of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). It is mainly used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It may also be prescribed to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or kidney problems in certain individuals with diabetes.

Telmisartan works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that causes blood vessels to narrow, leading to increased blood pressure. By blocking the effects of angiotensin II, Telmisartan helps relax and widen the blood vessels, thus lowering blood pressure and improving blood flow.

If you forget to take a dose of Telmisartan, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.

Common side effects of Telmisartan may include dizziness, headache, back pain, diarrhea, or upper respiratory tract infections. However, not everyone experiences these side effects. Serious side effects such as allergic reactions, swelling, or difficulty breathing are rare but require immediate medical attention.

No, Telmisartan should not be used during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby. It is also not recommended for breastfeeding mothers as it may pass into breast milk and harm the nursing infant. Consult with your healthcare provider for alternative treatments if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Telmisartan may interact with certain medications or substances, including other blood pressure medications, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), diuretics, or potassium supplements. Always inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking to ensure safe and effective use of Telmisartan.

Telmisartan may start reducing blood pressure within a few hours of the first dose. However, it may take several weeks for the full benefits of the medication to be seen. It is important to continue taking Telmisartan as prescribed, even if you feel well, to maintain optimal blood pressure control.

Telmisartan is not recommended for use in children under the age of 18, as its safety and effectiveness in this population have not been established. It is typically prescribed for adults only.

Drinking alcohol in moderation is generally considered safe while taking Telmisartan. However, excessive alcohol consumption may increase the risk of low blood pressure or other complications. It is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider regarding the use of alcohol while on this medication.

Warning

WARNING: This drug can cause serious (possibly fatal) harm to an unborn baby if used during pregnancy. Therefore, it is important to prevent pregnancy while taking this medication. Consult your doctor for more details and to discuss the use of reliable forms of birth control while taking this medication. If you are planning pregnancy, become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, tell your doctor right away.
