Faq for SENNOSIDES - ORAL
Sennosides are a group of compounds found in plants, particularly in the leaves and fruits of the senna plant. They are used as a natural laxative and are commonly found in over-the-counter oral medications.
Sennosides work by irritating the lining of the intestine, which increases the contractions of the muscles in the colon. This helps to promote bowel movements and relieve constipation.
Some common brand names for sennosides include Senokot, Ex-Lax, and Perdiem.
The onset of action of sennosides can vary from a few hours to several hours, depending on the individual and the dosage taken. It is recommended to take sennosides at bedtime to allow enough time for the laxative effect to occur.
Common side effects of sennosides may include abdominal cramping, diarrhea, nausea, and mild electrolyte imbalance. Prolonged or excessive use of sennosides may lead to dependence and damage to the colon.
It is important to consult a healthcare professional before taking sennosides during pregnancy or breastfeeding. They will be able to assess the potential risks and benefits and provide personalized advice.
Sennosides should only be used as a short-term solution to relieve occasional constipation. Prolonged or excessive use can lead to dependence and damage to the colon. If constipation persists or worsens, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
Sennosides may interact with certain medications, such as diuretics, digoxin, and corticosteroids. It is important to inform your healthcare professional about all the medications you are taking to avoid any potential interactions.
Sennosides should not be used as a weight loss aid. While they may cause temporary weight loss due to increased bowel movements, it is not a sustainable or healthy approach to weight management.
