Faq for SECUKINUMAB - INJECTION
Secukinumab is a medication that is injected to treat certain autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It works by blocking the action of a specific protein in the body called interleukin-17A, which is involved in inflammation.
Secukinumab is administered as an injection. It can be either self-injected or given by a healthcare professional.
The dosing schedule for Secukinumab varies depending on the specific condition being treated. For psoriasis, the recommended starting dose is usually one injection per week for the first five weeks, followed by one injection every four weeks. For psoriatic arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis, the initial dosing may be different and your doctor will provide specific instructions.
Like any medication, Secukinumab can cause side effects. Some common side effects include upper respiratory tract infections, injection site reactions, and headache. Serious side effects such as infections, allergic reactions, and inflammatory bowel disease have been reported but are rare. It is important to discuss the potential risks and side effects with your doctor before starting treatment.
It is recommended to avoid using Secukinumab during pregnancy unless the potential benefit outweighs the potential risks. The use of Secukinumab while breastfeeding is also not recommended. It is important to consult with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding before starting this medication.
The onset of action can vary among individuals. Some patients may start to see improvement in their symptoms within a few weeks, while for others it may take longer. It is important to continue the treatment as prescribed and have regular follow-up visits with your doctor to assess the effectiveness.
There are no specific interactions between Secukinumab and alcohol. However, excessive alcohol consumption can have negative effects on overall health and may worsen certain conditions. It is recommended to drink alcohol in moderation, or as advised by your healthcare provider.
Before starting Secukinumab, it is generally recommended to complete all recommended vaccinations. While on this medication, live vaccines should be avoided. It is important to discuss any upcoming vaccinations with your doctor to ensure appropriate timing and safety.
Secukinumab should only be stopped under the guidance of your doctor. Abruptly stopping the medication can lead to a flare-up of symptoms. Your doctor will determine the appropriate duration of treatment based on your condition and response to therapy.
