Faq for PERAMPANEL - ORAL

Perampanel is an oral medication primarily used to treat epilepsy in patients aged 4 years and older who are experiencing partial-onset seizures or generalized tonic-clonic seizures.

Perampanel works by blocking certain receptors in the brain called AMPA receptors. By doing so, it helps reduce the excessive electrical activity in the brain that causes seizures.

The recommended starting dosage of Perampanel is generally 2 mg per day, which can be increased gradually based on the individual patient's response and tolerability. The maximum recommended dosage is 12 mg per day.

Some common side effects of Perampanel include dizziness, sleepiness, tiredness, irritability, mood changes, balance problems, coordination difficulties, and falls. It may also cause behavioral or psychiatric changes, including aggression, agitation, and suicidal thoughts.

Yes, Perampanel can be used in children aged 4 years and older for the treatment of epilepsy. However, its use should be carefully monitored by a pediatric neurologist.

Perampanel can be taken with certain other epilepsy medications, but it may also interact with others. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the best medication combination and dosage for each individual patient.

The effectiveness of Perampanel may vary from person to person. Some individuals may experience a reduction in seizures within a few weeks, while others may take longer. It is important to continue taking the medication as prescribed by a doctor for a sufficient period to assess its effectiveness.

The use of Perampanel during pregnancy is generally not recommended unless the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. It is essential to discuss any plans for pregnancy or potential risks with a healthcare professional before taking Perampanel.

Consuming alcohol while taking Perampanel increases the risk of side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and impaired coordination. It is advisable to avoid or limit alcohol consumption while on this medication.

Warning

WARNING: Perampanel may cause or worsen mental/mood disorders. Tell your doctor right away if you or your family/caregiver notice any unusual behavior changes (including aggression, attempts to hurt others, impulsive actions) or other mental/mood changes (including anxiety, irritability, hostile/angry feelings, paranoia, hallucinations, delusions, thoughts of harming others). Be especially watchful for these symptoms when you first start this medication or when the dose is changed. These symptoms may also occur even after stopping perampanel. Do not drink alcoholic beverages while taking perampanel because alcohol may make these symptoms worse.
