Faq for OLANZAPINE/FLUOXETINE - ORAL
Olanzapine/Fluoxetine is an oral medication used to treat bipolar depression and treatment-resistant depression.
Olanzapine is an antipsychotic medication that helps balance certain natural substances in the brain. Fluoxetine is an antidepressant that works by increasing the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, in the brain.
Common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, weight gain, increased appetite, dry mouth, constipation, and tremors.
It can take several weeks for Olanzapine/Fluoxetine to start working effectively. It is important to continue taking the medication as prescribed and consult a healthcare professional if there are no improvements or any concerns.
Olanzapine/Fluoxetine should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed, as it may harm an unborn baby. It is essential to discuss the potential risks and benefits with a healthcare professional before using this medication when pregnant.
It is important to inform a healthcare professional about all the medications being taken, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. Certain medications can interact with Olanzapine/Fluoxetine, potentially causing harmful side effects.
If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered. However, if it is close to the next scheduled dose, it is better to skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule.
Stopping Olanzapine/Fluoxetine abruptly may result in withdrawal symptoms. It is recommended to gradually reduce the dosage under the guidance of a healthcare professional to minimize potential withdrawal effects.
Olanzapine/Fluoxetine is not known to cause dependency or addiction. However, sudden discontinuation without proper medical supervision may lead to withdrawal symptoms.
Warning
WARNING: Antidepressant medications are used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression and other mental/mood disorders. These medications can help prevent suicidal thoughts/attempts and provide other important benefits. However, studies have shown that a small number of people (especially people younger than 25) who take antidepressants for any condition may experience worsening depression, other mental/mood symptoms, or suicidal thoughts/attempts. Therefore, it is very important to talk with the doctor about the risks and benefits of antidepressant medication (especially for people younger than 25), even if treatment is not for a mental/mood condition. Tell the doctor right away if you notice worsening depression/other psychiatric conditions, unusual behavior changes (including possible suicidal thoughts/attempts), or other mental/mood changes (including new/worsening anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, irritability, hostile/angry feelings, impulsive actions, severe restlessness, very rapid speech). Be especially watchful for these symptoms when a new antidepressant is started or when the dose is changed. There may be a slightly increased risk of serious, possibly fatal side effects (such as stroke, heart failure, fast/irregular heartbeat, pneumonia) when this medication is used by older adults with dementia. This medication is not approved for the treatment of dementia-related behavior problems. Discuss the risks and benefits of this medication, as well as other effective and possibly safer treatments for dementia-related behavior problems, with the doctor.
