Faq for MITOTANE - ORAL

Mitotane is an oral medication that is used to treat adrenal cortical carcinoma, a type of cancer that affects the adrenal glands.

Mitotane works by decreasing the production of hormones in the adrenal glands, which can help slow down the growth of adrenal cortical carcinoma.

Common side effects of Mitotane include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, dizziness, skin rash, and tiredness.

Mitotane should be taken with food to help reduce stomach upset. It is usually taken 2 to 4 times daily, as prescribed by your doctor.

Yes, it is important to avoid becoming pregnant while taking Mitotane, as it can harm the fetus. Additionally, Mitotane may interact with other medications, so it is important to inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking.

The effectiveness of Mitotane may vary from person to person. It can take several weeks or even months before you notice any improvement in your condition.

It is generally recommended to avoid alcohol while taking Mitotane, as it can increase the risk of side effects and liver damage.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

While Mitotane can help slow down the growth of adrenal cortical carcinoma, it may not cure the disease. Other treatments, such as surgery and radiation therapy, may also be needed.

Warning

WARNING: Mitotane can make it more difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. Before having surgery or emergency treatment, or if you get a serious illness/injury, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication. Your doctor may need to stop this medication and prescribe another medication (corticosteroid) during this time.
