LOPERAMIDE/SIMETHICONE - ORAL
PHONETIC PRONUNCIATION: (low-PAIR-uh-mide/sye-METH-ih-cone)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Imodium Advanced
GENERIC NAME(S): loperamide HCl/simethicone
Uses
USES: This combination medication is used to treat diarrhea and symptoms of gas (e.g., cramps, bloating, pressure). Loperamide works by slowing down the movement of the gut. This decreases the number of bowel movements and makes the stool less watery. Simethicone helps break up gas bubbles in the gut. This product treats only the symptoms, not the cause of the diarrhea (e.g., infection). Treatment of other symptoms and the cause of the diarrhea should be determined by your doctor. Do not use in children younger than 6 years unless directed by your doctor. See also Warning section.
How to use LOPERAMIDE/SIMETHICONE - ORAL
HOW TO USE: See also Warning section. If you are using the over-the-counter product to self-treat, read all the directions on the product package before taking this medication. If your doctor has prescribed this medication, follow your doctor's directions and the directions on your prescription label. Take this medication by mouth after each loose bowel movement as needed, or as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your condition and response to treatment. In children, dosage is also based on age and weight. Follow the directions on the package for further doses if needed after your first dose. Do not take more of this medication than recommended for your age on the package label. Diarrhea can cause a serious loss of body water (dehydration). Drink plenty of fluids and minerals (electrolytes) to replace what is lost. Tell your doctor right away if you develop signs of dehydration (e.g., extreme thirst, decreased urination, muscle cramps, weakness, fainting). You may also need to change to a bland diet during this time to reduce irritation to your stomach/intestines. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information. Tell your doctor if your diarrhea does not improve after 2 days, if your condition worsens, or if you develop new symptoms. If you develop blood in the stool, fever, or an uncomfortable fullness/swelling of the stomach/abdomen, or if you think you may have a serious medical problem, seek immediate medical attention.

Common side effects of Loperamide/Simethicone may include constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and abdominal discomfort. In rare cases, more severe side effects such as severe stomach pain, severe constipation, and allergic reactions may occur.
Loperamide/Simethicone is generally not recommended for use in children under the age of 12. It is important to consult with a pediatrician before giving this medication to a child.
It is advised to consult with a healthcare professional before taking Loperamide/Simethicone during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, as the safety of the medication for these periods is not well-established.
Loperamide/Simethicone should be taken orally, usually after each loose bowel movement or as directed by a healthcare professional. The dosage and duration of treatment will vary depending on the individual's condition.
Loperamide/Simethicone may interact with certain medications, such as drugs that slow down intestinal movements or medications that cause drowsiness. It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking to avoid any potential interactions.
Loperamide/Simethicone is typically used for the short-term relief of acute diarrhea. If you are experiencing chronic diarrhea, it is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional to identify and treat the underlying cause.
Loperamide/Simethicone usually starts working within 1 to 2 hours after taking the medication. However, the exact onset of relief may vary from person to person.
