Letermovir is a medication that belongs to a group of drugs known as antiviral agents. It is used to prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and disease in adults who have received a hematopoietic stem cell transplant.

Letermovir works by inhibiting the replication of CMV. It specifically targets the viral terminase complex, which is involved in the maturation of the CMV virus. By inhibiting this process, Letermovir prevents the production of infectious CMV particles.

Letermovir is administered as an injection into a vein (intravenous) by a healthcare professional. The recommended dosage and treatment duration depend on various factors, including the patient's body weight and transplant type.

The common side effects of Letermovir include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, peripheral edema, cough, headache, and fatigue. It is always important to discuss any side effects with your healthcare provider.

Yes, Letermovir can interact with other medications. It is crucial to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking before starting Letermovir. Some medications, such as cyclosporine and certain antifungals, may interact with Letermovir and affect its effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects.

Letermovir is not recommended for individuals who are allergic to Letermovir or any of its components. It is also contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding women, as its safety during these conditions has not been established.

The duration of Letermovir treatment varies depending on the specific patient's situation. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate treatment duration, which is typically started shortly before the stem cell transplant and continued for a certain period post-transplant.

If you miss a dose of Letermovir, contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible. They will provide guidance on whether the missed dose should be taken or if any adjustments need to be made to your treatment plan.

Letermovir is not a cure for CMV infection. It is used as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of CMV infection and disease in adult patients who have undergone a hematopoietic stem cell transplant. It is important to follow all prescribed treatments and precautions to manage CMV effectively.
