Follitropin alfa injection is used to treat infertility in women by stimulating the development of multiple eggs in the ovaries.
Follitropin alfa injection works by replacing or supplementing the natural follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in the body, which is responsible for the growth and development of ovarian follicles.
Follitropin alfa injection is administered subcutaneously, typically in the lower abdomen or thigh area.
Common side effects of follitropin alfa injection include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, bloating, injection site reactions, and mood swings. It may also increase the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which can cause abdominal discomfort and fluid retention.
The response to follitropin alfa injection varies among individuals, but follicle development can usually be detected within a week of starting treatment. It may take several weeks to complete a treatment cycle.
The dosage of follitropin alfa injection is individualized based on the patient's specific situation and response to treatment. It is usually started at a low dose and adjusted as necessary.
Follitropin alfa injection is primarily used in women for infertility treatment and is not commonly prescribed for men. However, it can be used off-label in certain cases of male infertility.
Follitropin alfa injection is not recommended for use while breastfeeding, as its effects on breast milk production and the nursing infant are not well-established. It is best to consult with a healthcare professional before using this medication while breastfeeding.
There are no known drug interactions with follitropin alfa injection. However, it is always important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal supplements.
