Exemestane is used to treat certain types of breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
Exemestane is an aromatase inhibitor, which means it blocks the enzyme responsible for converting androgens into estrogens. By reducing estrogen levels, it helps prevent the growth and spread of breast cancer cells.
The common side effects of Exemestane include hot flashes, nausea, fatigue, headache, joint pain, and increased sweating.
Exemestane is usually taken once a day after a meal or as directed by your doctor. It is important to take it consistently at the same time every day.
No, Exemestane is contraindicated during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding as it can pass into breast milk and harm the nursing baby.
Exemestane may interact with certain medications, including estrogen-containing products, tamoxifen, warfarin, and certain antifungal drugs. It is important to inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking.
The duration of Exemestane treatment is usually determined by your oncologist. It is typically taken for 5 years or as recommended.
Yes, Exemestane may increase the risk of osteoporosis and bone loss. Your doctor may recommend regular bone density tests and prescribe calcium and vitamin D supplements to help protect your bones.
