ETELCALCETIDE - INJECTION
PHONETIC PRONUNCIATION: (E-tel-KAL-se-tide)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Parsabiv
GENERIC NAME(S): etelcalcetide hydrochloride
Uses
USES: This medication is used to treat increased amounts of a certain hormone (parathyroid) in people with long-term kidney disease who are on dialysis. Dialysis treatment usually causes higher than normal amounts of certain substances (such as parathyroid hormone, calcium, phosphorus) in your body. This medication works by decreasing how much parathyroid hormone your body makes. This effect helps lower calcium and phosphorus levels in your blood. Having the right amounts of parathyroid hormone, calcium, and phosphorus in your body can help prevent bone problems.
How to use ETELCALCETIDE - INJECTION
HOW TO USE: This medication is given by injection into a vein as directed by your doctor, usually 3 times each week at the end of dialysis treatment. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. If you miss a regularly scheduled dialysis treatment, you should not receive this medication until the end of your next dialysis treatment. If your doctor is switching you from treatment with cinacalcet (a different medication used to decrease parathyroid hormone) to this medication, the cinacalcet should be stopped at least 7 days before starting etelcalcetide.

Faq for ETELCALCETIDE - INJECTION
Etelcalcetide is a medication that is injected into the bloodstream to treat high levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are receiving dialysis.
Etelcalcetide works by mimicking the action of calcium in the body, which helps to decrease the production of PTH. By reducing the levels of PTH, Etelcalcetide helps to regulate calcium and phosphorus levels in patients with CKD.
Etelcalcetide is administered as a subcutaneous injection, which means it is injected just below the skin. It is usually given three times a week at the end of dialysis sessions.
Some common side effects of Etelcalcetide include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle spasms, headache, and dizziness. It is important to notify your doctor if you experience any severe side effects or allergic reactions.
Yes, Etelcalcetide may interact with other medications, particularly those that affect calcium levels in the body. It is important to inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.
The effects of Etelcalcetide may vary from person to person. Generally, it may take several weeks to months for Etelcalcetide to effectively lower PTH levels and regulate calcium and phosphorus levels.
Etelcalcetide should not be used in patients with low blood calcium levels (hypocalcemia) or hypersensitivity to the drug. It is important to discuss your medical history with your doctor before starting Etelcalcetide to ensure its safe and appropriate use.
Etelcalcetide should be stored in the refrigerator at a temperature of 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze the medication and protect it from light. It should be kept out of the reach of children.
If you miss a dose of Etelcalcetide, you should contact your healthcare provider for further instructions. It is important not to double the dose to make up for the missed dose.
