Eplerenone is used to treat high blood pressure and to improve survival after a heart attack.
Eplerenone works by blocking the action of a hormone called aldosterone, which helps regulate salt and water in the body. By blocking aldosterone, Eplerenone helps lower blood pressure and reduce fluid retention.
Eplerenone should not be used during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby. It is important to use effective birth control while taking this medication.
Common side effects of Eplerenone include dizziness, diarrhea, cough, flu-like symptoms, tiredness, and high levels of potassium in the blood. It is important to notify your doctor if you experience any side effects.
It is important to inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking before starting Eplerenone, as it may interact with certain drugs. It is particularly important to avoid using potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics while taking Eplerenone.
Eplerenone may take several weeks to start working effectively. It is important to continue taking the medication as prescribed, even if you do not notice immediate effects.
Eplerenone can be taken with or without food, as directed by your doctor. However, taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset.
It is generally recommended to avoid excessive alcohol consumption while taking Eplerenone, as alcohol can increase the risk of certain side effects such as dizziness or fainting.
Eplerenone should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems, as it may further impair kidney function. Your doctor will determine if it is safe to use Eplerenone in your particular case.
