PHONETIC PRONUNCIATION: (ELB-as-vir/graz-OH-pre-vir)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Zepatier

GENERIC NAME(S): elbasvir/grazoprevir

Uses

USES: This medication is used to treat chronic (long-lasting) hepatitis C, a viral infection of the liver. Elbasvir and grazoprevir work by reducing the amount of hepatitis C virus in your body, which helps your immune system fight the infection and may help your liver recover. This product may also be used with certain other medications (such as ribavirin). Chronic hepatitis C infection can cause serious liver problems such as scarring (cirrhosis) or liver cancer. It is not known if this treatment can prevent you from passing the virus to others. Do not share needles, and practice "safer sex" (including the use of latex condoms) to lower the risk of passing the virus to others.

Elbasvir/Grazoprevir is an oral combination medication used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. It contains two antiviral drugs, elbasvir and grazoprevir, which work together to inhibit the replication of the HCV.

Elbasvir/Grazoprevir acts by targeting specific enzymes in the HCV virus, preventing its replication and spread in the body. It interferes with the ability of the virus to reproduce, thereby reducing its viral load.

Elbasvir/Grazoprevir is primarily used for the treatment of chronic HCV genotype 1 or genotype 4 infection in adults. It is often prescribed as part of a combination therapy with other antiviral medications, such as ribavirin or sofosbuvir.

Common side effects of Elbasvir/Grazoprevir may include headache, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, itching, or trouble sleeping. It is essential to consult a healthcare professional if you experience any severe or persistent side effects.

The duration of treatment with Elbasvir/Grazoprevir can vary depending on several factors, such as the genotype of the HCV infection and the presence of any liver complications. It typically ranges from 8 to 16 weeks, as determined by a healthcare provider.

Elbasvir/Grazoprevir has a high cure rate for chronic hepatitis C infections, especially for genotype 1 or genotype 4. It is essential to complete the full prescribed course of treatment to maximize the chances of achieving a sustained virologic response (SVR), which indicates a cure.

Elbasvir/Grazoprevir has the potential for interactions with certain medications, including some antivirals, antibiotics, antifungals, and other drugs that affect liver enzymes. It is crucial to inform your healthcare provider about any medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking before starting Elbasvir/Grazoprevir.

Elbasvir/Grazoprevir is not generally recommended for use during pregnancy, as it may cause harm to the developing fetus. It is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits with a healthcare provider before initiating treatment. It is also not known if the drug passes into breast milk, so breastfeeding women should consult their doctor.

If you miss a dose of Elbasvir/Grazoprevir, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Avoid taking a double dose to make up for the missed one.

Common side effects of Elbasvir/Grazoprevir may include headache, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and difficulty sleeping. It is important to report any severe or persistent side effects to your healthcare provider.

The duration of treatment with Elbasvir/Grazoprevir depends on several factors, including the genotype of the hepatitis C virus and the individual's response to the medication. In general, treatment duration can range from 8 to 16 weeks.

Elbasvir/Grazoprevir can interact with certain medications, so it is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking. Some medications, such as certain antivirals and medications used to treat HIV, may interact negatively with Elbasvir/Grazoprevir. Your healthcare provider can determine if it is safe to use Elbasvir/Grazoprevir with other medications.

Yes, there are some precautions and warnings associated with Elbasvir/Grazoprevir. It is important to notify your healthcare provider if you have any liver or kidney problems, if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, if you have a history of hepatitis B infection, or if you are taking any other medications. Additionally, Elbasvir/Grazoprevir should not be used in patients with moderate to severe liver impairment.

Elbasvir/Grazoprevir may not be suitable for everyone with hepatitis C. It is important to consult with your healthcare provider to determine if this medication is appropriate for you. They will consider factors such as your specific genotype of the hepatitis C virus, your overall health, and any other medications you may be taking.
