Faq for DACTINOMYCIN - INJECTION
Dactinomycin is a medication that is used to treat certain types of cancer. It belongs to a class of drugs called antineoplastics.
Dactinomycin is administered through injection into a vein (intravenous) by a healthcare professional.
Dactinomycin is commonly used in the treatment of various types of childhood cancers such as Wilms' tumor (kidney cancer), rhabdomyosarcoma (soft tissue tumors), and Ewing's sarcoma (bone cancer). It can also be used in the treatment of certain types of adult cancers, including gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (a rare type of uterine cancer).
Dactinomycin works by interfering with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. It specifically inhibits the synthesis of genetic material (DNA) in cancer cells, preventing them from multiplying and spreading.
Common side effects of Dactinomycin may include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, hair loss, tiredness, and temporary decrease in blood cell counts. It is important to discuss any symptoms or concerns with your healthcare provider.
The duration of treatment with Dactinomycin varies depending on the type and stage of cancer being treated. It is usually given in cycles, with periods of treatment followed by rest periods to allow the body to recover. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate treatment schedule for you.
Dactinomycin should not be used during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding as it can pass into breast milk and harm the nursing infant. It is important to discuss pregnancy or breastfeeding plans with your healthcare provider before starting treatment with Dactinomycin.
It is crucial to inform your healthcare provider about any other medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking, as they may interact with Dactinomycin. It is also important to inform your healthcare provider about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially liver or kidney problems. Dactinomycin may increase the risk of liver toxicity, so regular monitoring of liver function may be required during treatment.
Dactinomycin can be an effective treatment for certain types of cancer but does not guarantee a cure. The response to treatment and the prognosis depend on various factors such as the type and stage of cancer, overall health of the patient, and individual response to the medication. Regular follow-up and monitoring by your healthcare provider are essential.
