Faq for BARICITINIB - ORAL
- Baricitinib is an oral medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. It is primarily used to treat rheumatoid arthritis in adults.
- Baricitinib works by suppressing the immune system and reducing inflammation in the body. It inhibits specific enzymes called Janus kinases, which play a role in the immune response and the inflammation process.
- The common side effects of baricitinib may include upper respiratory tract infections, headaches, nausea, diarrhea, and an increased risk of serious infections. It is important to discuss these potential side effects with your healthcare provider.
- Baricitinib is not currently approved for use in children or adolescents. It is only indicated for use in adults with certain conditions.
- Baricitinib is taken orally as a tablet once daily. The recommended starting dosage is usually 2 mg per day, but it may be adjusted based on the patient's response and individual needs.
- It is recommended to avoid using baricitinib during pregnancy unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks. It is also advised to discontinue the medication while breastfeeding, as its safety in breast milk is not known.
- Baricitinib may interact with certain medications, such as strong CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers, immunosuppressive drugs, and live vaccines. It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
- The onset of action for baricitinib can vary among individuals. Some patients may start experiencing improvements in their symptoms within a few weeks, while others may take longer. It is essential to follow the recommended dosage and treatment duration for optimal results.
- Baricitinib can be used alone or in combination with other disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, as recommended by your healthcare provider.
Warning
WARNING: Baricitinib may lower your ability to fight infections. This may make you more likely to get a serious (rarely fatal) infection or make any infection you have worse. The most common serious infections include pneumonia, shingles, and urinary tract infections. The risk for infections may be higher if you also take other drugs that suppress the immune system (such as methotrexate, corticosteroids). Tell your doctor right away if you have any signs of infection (such as a sore throat that doesn't go away, fever, chills, cough, painful/frequent urination, non-healing skin sores). You should have a tuberculosis (TB) skin test before and during treatment with this medication. Tell your doctor if you have been near someone with tuberculosis or have lived or traveled in areas where certain fungal infections (such as coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis) are common. These areas include the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys and the southwestern United States. Though it is very unlikely to occur, there may be a risk of developing cancer (such as lymphoma, skin cancer) with this medication. Tell your doctor right away if you develop symptoms such as fever that doesn't go away, unusual lumps/growths, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, change in appearance or size of moles, or unusual skin changes. Baricitinib may rarely cause serious blood clots to form in the legs or lungs. Tell your doctor if you have a history of blood clots (such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism). Get medical help right away if you develop symptoms of a blood clot, including shortness of breath/rapid breathing, chest pain, or pain/swelling/warmth in the groin/calf.
